Orchard Place Receives $57,117 Gift from Variety the Children’s Charity for Critical Upgrades at the Residential Campus

DES MOINES, IA - For 34 years, Variety the Children’s Charity has partnered with Orchard Place to foster a safe environment for children and youth to overcome their mental health challenges. Their latest gift of $57,117 will provide essential flooring in two units at the Orchard Place Residential Campus.

“Providing a safe and welcoming environment is critically important for the youth and families we serve,” shared Amber Rand, Vice President of the Orchard Place Residential Campus. “Receiving this funding will assist us in updating the facilities to feel more home-like for youth so they can best move towards healing.”

Jacobson and Shiffler Houses have served as a place of healing for hundreds of youths since they were built in 1992. With the last flooring update occurring over 15 years ago, the units have experienced significant wear. Variety understands the impact a safe environment can have on the growth of youth. Their generosity is providing new vinyl flooring, making the units more safe, cleaner, and durable.

“Orchard Place allows me more freedoms and room for improvement than other treatment facilities I have attended,” explained a Shiffler resident. Youth ages 10 to 18 years old stay at the Residential Campus for an average of seven months. Kelsey W., a Milieu Treatment Coordinator at the Residential Campus, said, “This gift from Variety will allow the space to feel more like a comfort than an institution. Hopefully, this will make it easier for the residents to open up to staff.”
