When concerns arise that a child may have experienced abuse, finding answers requires a thoughtful and specialized approach. That’s where Discovery Work comes in.
Discovery Work is a unique therapeutic process designed to help children share their experiences in a safe, supportive environment. Unlike traditional therapy, which focuses on healing from trauma, Discovery Work helps gather additional information when abuse is suspected, allowing children to tell their stories in their own words.
“Letting the child tell their own story is more impactful and can lead to faster healing and management of the trauma,” said Orchard Place therapist Chris Schwab.
Using a structured, evidence-informed approach, specially trained therapists guide children through a carefully designed process that allows them to share their experiences in their own words, without pressure, suggestion, or leading questions. This helps ensure the child’s voice remains at the center of the process.
Discovery Work can also help protect children and support families by providing clarity, establishing safe boundaries, and creating opportunities for healing.
Orchard Place is one of only a few organizations in Iowa that offers Discovery Work.
“Being one of the few places in the state that offers this type of therapy gives children and families a place to come, process, and learn to heal with well-trained therapists who are tops in their field,” Schwab said.
Providing Discovery Work requires specialized training through nationally recognized protocols and methods. At Orchard Place, our therapists are equipped with the knowledge and experience needed to guide children and families through this important process.
Every child deserves to be heard. Through Discovery Work, Orchard Place helps children share their stories, supports families in finding clarity, and creates pathways toward healing and safety.
