Bright Smiles, Brighter Futures

Dental visits can be scary for some kids, especially those focusing on their mental health. That’s why Dental Connections has joined forces with Orchard Place to create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere that eases fears and builds trust. By teaming up, Orchard Place children get the best care both for their teeth and their minds, showing that taking care of their health is about more than just fixing a smile – it’s about nurturing their entire well-being. It’s a partnership that’s not only smart but also kind!

Founded in 1919 as the Des Moines Health Center, it was started by a group of civic leaders in response to a growing demand for healthcare services for low-income families following World War I. Fast forward to 2016, the group changed its name to Dental Connections. Today, they are a non-profit community health center that promotes equitable access to quality oral health care for children and adults. In partnership with Orchard Place since 2022, their “Smile Squad” travels the Orchard Place Residential Campus in a mobile unit providing x-rays, cleanings, and other dental procedures.

“Orchard Place is a great partner for Dental Connections,” said Courtney Wolterman, the Dental Connections Director of Community Programs. “Not everyone loves visiting the dentist and sometimes the drive and wait-time cause anxiety. By being on-site, we eliminate transportation barriers and students can stay in the classroom until the appointment time.”

Enjoying the partnership, Wolterman said many of the children they see on the Residential Campus have not been to the dentist for a few years or are due for checkups. “The mobile clinic visits about once a month. We work closely with the Orchard Place nursing staff to coordinate these services.”
